Fireworks and Freddy

Here are 10 tips to help calm your pets during fireworks:

1. **Create a Safe Space**: Set up a comfortable, quiet area where your pet can retreat. Some will do better in a crate. Include their bed, favorite toys, and some treats.

2. **Background Noise**: Play calming music, white noise, or turn on the TV to help mask the sounds.

3. **Stay Calm**: Pets can sense your anxiety. Stay calm and relaxed to help them feel more secure.

4. **Close Windows and Curtains**: This helps to muffle the sound and block out flashes of light from fireworks.

5. **Use a Thundershirt**: These snug-fitting garments can help reduce anxiety in dogs and some cats by applying gentle pressure.

6. **Provide Distractions**: Offer new toys or engage in playtime to keep their mind off the noise outside. Sometimes we run the dishwasher for noise they’re used to.

7. **Comfort Them**: If your pet comes to you for comfort, pet them and speak to them in a soothing voice. However, don't overly coddle them, as this might reinforce fearful behavior.

8. **Natural Remedies**: Exercise them during the day. Consider natural calming aids like pheromone diffusers (e.g., Adaptil for dogs, Feliway for cats) or consult your vet for other safe options. “Rescue Me” drops work well during thunderstorms, also.

9. **Desensitization Training**: Gradually expose your pet to recorded firework sounds at a low volume, rewarding calm behavior, and increasing volume over time.

10. **Consult Your Veterinarian**: For pets with severe anxiety, your vet might recommend medication such as Benadryl or other professional interventions to help manage their stress during fireworks.

However, you celebrate, have a happy and safe Fourth of July. 🇺🇸
