Who doesn't love a Dachshund... or three? They are friendly, bold, and always up for an adventure. Just like my friend, Luann. They are easy to spot and easy to love. Just like my friend, Luann. Haha. Ok, enough.
The Dachshund breed originated in Germany in the sixteenth century. They were bred to chase down prey like badgers and foxes. The name means "Badger Dog" Those little legs sure can move fast and their size is perfect to fit down in the dens. They were helpful in putting dinner on the table and the fox fur could be sold for goods. (Dogs have been serving man for hundreds of years and can't even go into public places.) The good news is Mini's can fit in your bag and the Standard's can hide in a stroller.
Not surprising is that the Dachshund is often difficult to train. They are very intelligent but very stubborn. You will need to be stern and stay consistent with these lil weiner dogs. Once properly trained, they make great companions and loyal family pets. They have become one of the most beloved breeds in America. The Weiner dog races are coming soon. The best Fall tradition for all dog lovers.
There were a couple of famous Dachshunds of our time. One was Pablo Picasso's dog, named "Lump" who inspired some his works. (And also ate some of it) The second was Waldi, a stuffed toy in likeness of a Doxy. He was the first Olympic Mascot and symbol of the 1972 Summer Games in Munich, Germany.
So, what's it like to own one?
You will need to have a lot of patience with training. It has been quoted that, "doxy's train you, you don't train them." The first year is said to be the most important in training and discipline. They do need plenty of exercise and chew toys to soothe their hunter instincts. You will also need to secure the bottom perimeter of the the yard. They are known to instinctively dig, like a lot. Like all you'll see is their tail and them taking off down the street. "Sammy!!"
They are such characters and they bring many laughs. The depth of their love for family more than makes up for all the shenanigans and stubborness. There are many Doxy groups on line. Most of the members that I have had the pleasure to meet have been wonderful. Cheers to all.
So, be more like Doxies. Be silly, be adventurous, be stubborn, sometimes, and love always. Happy Fall!!
